There's not much climbing over the nine days, averaging only about 1,500 feet per day, with one or two unremarkable climbs of moderate length. Most other elevation is over rollers and the miles go by at an easy pace.

Highlights include Baja during the off-season, with perfect, dry cycling weather in the 70s but when tourists are few even in places like Ensenada. There's also a stop in San Ignacio, location of the very first mission, set along the famous springs and the place to break for a day of whale watching in the lagoon. Historic Loreto is a stop, and La Paz at the end, Baja's most pleasant city.

The food in Baja is delicious, even at hotels where we'll need to dine for a few nights. Baja tacos are the best in all of Mexico and seafood is abundant and fresh.

elevationIf you're taking it easy and want to ride only one or two full days point-to-point, this should be one of those days. Starting will cool, crisp ocean weather along the coast road which is mostly flat and fast to El Rosario, stopping for taco lunch before heading inland to the rolling hills of a nature preserve with endless vistas of cactus and Joshua trees. One of the trip's most desolate streteches, the solitudue lasts a few dozen miles before reaching the oasis of Catavina for the night. An early start (departing by 7:30-8:00 AM is required to make it to Catavina before nightfall.
